Cwm Mill, first built in 1823, is essentially a traditional Welsh long farmhouse although it was actually formed from the ruins of the former water mill and the adjacent mill keeper's cottage. The house overlooks the River Monnow and valley opposite and sits end on to the driveway and parking area.
At the front of the house sits a pretty, pebbled yard with a feature plough and tall shrubs. Beyond the shrubs, and running up to the River Monnow beyond, lies a large lawned garden. This garden is for the exclusive use of Cwm Mill guests. There are two picnic benches, and a BBQ provided for outdoor dining in the summer.
The main entrance door into the house opens into a large hallway in the middle of the property. This provides access to the two downstairs wings of the house. Also, a staircase rises from the back of the hallway and next to these stairs is a toilet and wash room.
The downstairs wing to the left mainly consists of a very large open plan kitchen and dining area. (There is also an utility / drying room which is accessed via a door at the back of the kitchen.).
There is feature stonework and beamed ceilings in this area giving an authentic and traditional rustic look. However, the recent comprehensive renovation has ensured that there is abundance of modern facilities and luxuries. The combination of wall and ceiling down lighters can be used in combination to provide bright working conditions or subdued lighting while dining or relaxing.
The kitchen is fully equipped to service modern living with a large family. Its a bespoke built fitted kitchen with a distressed off white finish and laid out in "L" shape with a large island unit in the middle of the "L". There is electric range cooker, enabling the preparation of large scale meals with comparative ease. There is also a complete range of other kitchen facilities including a 2L microwave oven (in the utility room), an integrated fridge, a fridge / freezer (utility room), a dishwasher and a four slice toaster.
Beyond the kitchen to the front of the house is the dining area. This features a centrally sited wood burning stove sitting in a wood and stonework finished fireplace. The custom made dining table is antique pine and complimented by 10 antique pine Windsor chairs. (we routinely leave just 8 in the room but add the other two for larger groups).
Our guests often feedback that the open plan layout between the large kitchen and dining area, and the cosy fireside setting, as well as the overall space available make it really nice to use the area not just for dining but for socialising too.
The other downstairs wing comprises of two rooms.
You firstly come to a luxuriously appointed 30ft by 24ft sitting room with 3 Sofas, an armchair, and feature fireplace with wood burning stove. (A further 2 armchairs are added when we host larger groups). For entertainment, we offer satellite TV, streamed catch up TV and access to subscription TV (Now TV, Netflix). We also have a very good WiFi service. There are books, CDs, Board Games and Dvds provided too. Beyond the Sitting room lies a 24ft by 9.5ft Games room with Snooker Table and Sofa Bed.
So unlike many other local holiday lets Cwm Mill not only sleeps larger family groups but provides them space and facilities to socialise too - all under one roof.
Taking the stairs from the hallway leads you up to a large landing with splendid views across the River Monnow of the other side of the valley. The landing gives access to 4 large bedrooms. All the bedrooms were re-equipped with new beds and Oak furniture in 2018. Top quality combination memory foam and coil sprung mattresses are to be found on every bed. Reviews over the last year frequently refer to how comfortably guests sleep.
The master bedroom offers a king size bed, a walk in wardrobe and ensuite shower room. A French window opening out to a Juliet balcony provides view of the Monnow and the valley opposite.
Within the same wing as the Master Bedroom is a second bedroom. This can be flexibly arranged according to guests needs. The standard configuration is two single beds but these can be combined to form a superking double. There is also more than sufficient space in the room to supplement the standard beds with a collapsible third single bed.
In the other wing, there are a further two double bedrooms as well as a family bathroom with spa bath and shower. Each of these are of rustic appearance with exposed beams.
When required we are able to use the Games room to create a 5th bedroom by utilising the Sofa Bed. In all the house can sleep 11 with dining space for 10. We also have two travel cots and two high chairs which can be made available on request.
